After an amazing showing of strength and solidarity during last week’s strike vote meetings, we have never been prouder to stand up on behalf of our hardworking union family. Our international brothers and sisters, representing Ahold Delhaize workers in Belgium and the Netherlands even flew in to Providence this week to address Stop & Shop directly at the table, calling their actions “shocking,” “scandalous,” and “disrespectful.”

According to the Stop & Shop negotiators, they’ve “heard us loud and clear.” Now it’s time for them to prove it.

Stop & Shop negotiators have made, what they believe to be significant progress in their proposals, but we are still far apart from reaching an agreement that truly values and respects your hard work.

It’s the pressure you’ve been putting on the company, through the conversations you’re having with your co-workers, the union gear you’re wearing in the stores, your social media posts, and our customers’ comments of solidarity and support, that is getting us closer.

In the meantime, if you are being asked to sign new or different work policies by management, or are being exposed to more difficult working conditions, or asked to waive your Weingarten Rights (see below), contact your union rep immediately. Continue sending us pictures and information that you’re getting in your stores and make sure you pack warm gear and comfortable shoes in your trunk or locker in case of a work action.  Because as our brother union negotiator for Ahold Delhaize’s supply chain in Belgium, said today “A decent contract or a strike, we are ready for both.”

It is because of your hard work that Stop & Shop remains the top supermarket in New England and we want to thank you for your dedication to making Stop & Shop a better place to work and shop. It is our goal to continue making your store better by insisting on a contract that reflects your true value and gives you the respect that you deserve.=

We know you want to be able to provide the very best service you can while still being able to provide for your families, however, Stop & Shop has continued to make regressive proposals at the negotiation table this year that would severely impact your lives in a negative way.

Stop & Shop wants to cut benefits and take-home pay for workers and rely on self-checkout and other technology. This will mean less customer service in the aisles, no fresh cut meat in the stores, longer lines at checkout, and more turnover.

Minimal progress has been made at the negotiation table because these types of cuts will make your job harder to do, harder to succeed in, and harder to build a better life for yourself and your families.

We know that your customers shop at Stop & Shop time after time because they like a store with friendly, knowledgeable employees and a well-stocked selection of high-quality products. We know you are the reason for Stop & Shop’s success and you deserve a good paying job and benefits that reflect that value.

It is important that we stand together and call on Stop & Shop to give us a contract that allows us to continue to live up to our reputation for providing excellent service.

As your negotiating committee continues to work hard at the bargaining table we ask that you continue to stand strong together and tell management that you won’t be settling for less than what you deserve!

The AFL-CIOs in CT, RI, and MA represent a combined 700,000 union members in the areas we represent. We thank them for their support in our struggle to get a fair contract for our hardworking members at Stop and Shop.

So astounding, in fact, that Ahold’s CEO and President, Frans Muller, had this to say:


“Today, Ahold Delhaize is fit for the future, with a very robust financial profile and the right structure to further grow our brands, both in-store and online.”


So, why is a company that is “solid,” “healthy,” and “strong,” and according to its own CEO, is “fit for the future” today, sitting across from us at the negotiation table trying to cut tens of millions of dollars from the very workers who built their success? Yes, they are still proposing tens of millions of dollars in cuts to your take home pay and benefits. And because of this, minimal progress has been made.


The company is nowhere close to agreeing to a contract that demonstrates the hardworking women and men who have built Stop & Shop’s success, but we remain committed to protecting the wages and benefits you have earned and deserve.


We hope that Stop & Shop doesn’t force us into a fight, but we will be prepared if they do.
